The Franklin Institute: Philly’s Playground for Your Intellect
Ever wondered what it’s like to be a super-athlete? Or maybe you’ve always wanted to see a Tesla coil in action? Perhaps you’re curious about what it’s like inside a human heart, or up high in an Air Force jet, or even higher in the sky—far off in the galaxy?
Look no further than the Franklin Institute, Philadelphia’s OG science museum. This hidden gem has been turning science into a thrilling adventure since 1824.
Founded by Benjamin Franklin (yes, that Ben Franklin), the Franklin Institute started as a humble subscription library. It didn’t take long for this library to evolve into a haven for curious 233104minds. Over the years, it’s played host to everything from the first public electric light demonstration to a live dissection of an elephant. Talk about a library card that pays off.
While the Franklin Institute is certainly a museum, it’s also much more. It’s a playground for the intellect and a place where science is brought to life in the most exciting ways possible. Interactive exhibits and hands-on displays delight science geeks of all ages. From the thrill of a giant Tesla coil to the mind-bending wonders of the planetarium and the heart-pounding excitement of a giant, walk-in-sized replica of a human heart, there’s something for everyone at the Franklin Institute.
Permanent exhibits include such Philly favorites as The Heart: A 21st Century Miracle. This exhibit takes you on a journey through the human heart, from its delicate chambers to its powerful contractions. You’ll even get to feel what it’s like to have a heart attack—without the actual heart attack, of course.
Another favorite is The Science of Sports. Have you ever wondered why athletes are so fast, so strong, and so…sweaty?
This exhibit explores the science behind sports, from the physics of a baseball pitch to the physiology of a marathon runner. You can even challenge a super-athlete to a race.
The institute’s tribute to its beloved founder, Electricity, is also a must-see exhibit, especially for anyone who’s been shocked by a doorknob. You’ll learn about the history of electricity and its applications, get a chance to have your hair stand on end and explore many other mind-blowing electrical experiments—with safety gear, of course.
Fantastic visiting exhibitions also grace the museum. Currently on display through mid-November (held-over, due to overwhelming demand!) is The Art of the Brick, the world’s largest display of LEGO art.
Whether you’re a science enthusiast, a curious kid, a kid-at-heart, or simply someone looking for a fun and educational day out, the Franklin Institute is the place to be. It’s where science is not just learned but experienced…all thanks to Ben.
